Descendants of Henry and Elisabeth Jackson Smith

1.  Henry SMITH was born on 15 May 1806 in North Carolina.  He died on 23 Aug 1886 in Lawrence Co., Missouri.  He was buried in Campground Cemetery, Chesapeake, Mo.

He was married to Elisabeth JACKSON on 22 Sep 1830 in Randolph Co., North Carolina.  Henry and his wife Elisabeth were both born in North Carolina, but at some point prior to the birth of their first child, Nancy, in 1832, they relocated to Tennessee.
They remained in Tennessee, until at least 1839, as the first four of their children, Nancy,  William, George W., and Charlotte were all born there. The fifth child, Jacob was the first to be born in Missouri, in 1840.

This second move, from Tennessee to Missouri, was made at a time when new lands were opened up in Southwestern Missouri. By the year 1900, the descendants of Henry and Elisabeth had, in their possession, at least 329 acres of land in and around the Chesapeake area of Lawrence County. Elisabeth JACKSON was born on 2 Jan 1815 in North Carolina.  She died on 11 Jan 1904 in Lawrence Co., Missouri.  She was buried in Campground Cemetery, Chesapeake, Mo.  Henry SMITH and Elisabeth JACKSON had the following children:

She was married to Ambrose Jackson DOSS (son of William DOSS and MCBRIDE) on 10 Nov 1883 in Lawrence Co., Missouri.14  Martha was married to Ambrose J. Doss, the son of William Doss, at the home of Robert Thompson, by Joel Martin, a minister of the gospel.  Ambrose Jackson DOSS was born on 27 Mar 1836 in Arkansas.  He was baptized on 4 May 1903 in Chesapeake Baptist Church, Lawrence Co., Mo. He died on 12 May 1913 in Lawrence Co., Missouri.20  The cause of death is listed as apoplexy, according to J.W. Smith, who signed the medical certificate of death.  He was buried on 13 May 1913 in Spring River Cemetery, Verona, Mo.  His grave is unmarked and the records for this cemetery include only the names of plot owners, and not who is buried there.

Ambrose's father passed away when he was just three years old, and his mother remarried.  Ambrose did not get along with his step father, so at the approximate age of 10, he left Missouri for a trip to California with his uncle Will. He and his brother Hugh Franklin are shown on the 1860 census for California as living in Yuba County, California, and Ambrose's occupation at that time is listed as Miner.

In a letter from Ambrose's granddaughter Shirley, dated March 29, 1996, she writes: "It seems as though Ambrose and his brother Frank took the first herd of horses from Missouri to California (Dad was not sure on the exact date). They settled in Orange County (which is now Disneyland). They had bought quite a bit of land there. Then Ambrose returned to Missouri. He later received word that Frank was very ill. Ambrose returned to California to be at his side, but Frank passed over before Ambrose could get there. Ambrose claimed a Mormon preacher bilked Frank out of their land as Frank deeded it over to Preacher on his death bed."  Shirley

Apparently Ambrose was in Lawrence County, Missouri in 1856, because Shirley told me that Ambrose held Martha in his arms when she was a baby, and he told her that he would come back one day and marry her - which he did! When Ambrose and Martha married, he worked for the Browning family of Verona as a farm laborer. That farm is now owned by Bill Davis.Ambrose's father passed away when he was just three years old, and his mother remarried.
