Descendants of Johannes Vandergrift



1. Johannes Jacobse Vandegrift was christened on 26 Jun 1667. He was baptized on 26 Jun 1667. On the 5th day of January, 1697, Johannes purchased a tract of 270 acres in Bensalem Twnshp., Bucks County, from Joseph Growden. Some of it adjoined land that his brother had purchased of Growden.l This deed was recorded in the court records of Bucks County.

Johannes, a yeoman, wrote his will on March 16, 1732, and named his wife and eldest son as executors. It was probated March 28, 1745 (File #518, Bucks County). The date of Neeltje's death is not known, but the Dutch Reformed Church of Neshaminy recorded the marriage of Johannes VANDEGRIFT, widower, to Elizabeth Snowden, widow, on July 1, 1741.

Johannes will, proved 28 Mar 1745, devised to son, Abraham, the farm he lived on, for life, and if he dies without issue it is to go to his surviving brothers and sisters.

3. Jacob Vandegrift (Johannes Jacobse-1) was christened in 1696. The given name of Jacob's wife is shrouded in consusion. According to the Abington Presbyterian Church records she was Choves Tonley, some records gave her as "Charity." In the Vandegrift Graveyard the gravestone reads "Jane, wife of Jacob 1697 -died April 15, 1766." In the records of the Newtown Presbyterian Church is the death of Jacob and Catharine his wife, who died 31st December 1772. Joseph Comly in his notes on Byberry, state the same information. Could it be that Jacob married a second time?

His will (File #1307, Bucks County) is dated October 4, 1770 and was probated May 11, 1771. In it he names children, but makes no mention of his wife. Two of his sons were named exectuors and it was witnessed by William Baker, James How and Anne Feaster.

In 1747, the following record was recorded in the Butch Reformed Church records at Churchville: "on 19th March, after three announcements, were married Jacob Vandegrift, young man, born in Lower Dublin in Philadelphia, in Bensalem Bucks County and Wilmot Johnson, young daughter and living in Bensalem." The next information on Jacob Vandegrift, is when Abraham Vandegrift was granted the administration of his estate on October 6, 1786, the bondsmen being Abraham, with Benjamin Severns and John Campbell. Jacob is not listed by Ralph Dean in this family.

18. John Vandegrift Esq. (Jacob-2, Johannes Jacobse-1) was born in 1723. He died on 25 Mar 1805 in Bensalem Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. The "History of Bucks County" by Wm. J. Buck, states that "On 13th Feb., 1778, a party of British Light Horse came into Bensalem and took prisoner John Vandegrift, the County Commissioner, and also his son and others".

John Vandegrift Esq. and Mary Praul were married on 14 Nov 1750 in Dutch Reformed Church, Abington. Mary Praul was born in 1726. She died on 3 Aug 1784. John Vandegrift Esq. and Mary Praul had the following children:

19. Bernard Vandegrift (Jacob-2, Johannes Jacobse-1) was born. Bernard settled in Upper Dublin Township, Philadelphia County, and received a plantation there of 210 acres which belonged to Peter Keen, together with a meadow which belonged to the late Neeltje Boon.

Jane Van Horn (daughter of John (Johannis) Van Horn and Rebecca Vandegrift) was born. Bernard Vandegrift and Jane Van Horn had the following children:

20. Jacob Vandegrift (Jacob-2, Johannes Jacobse-1) was born on 28 Feb 1729. He died on 28 Apr 1800 in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. At his father's death, Jacob inherited 200 acres of land where he was living. It is thought that he was a slave owner. Jacob was a farmer in Bucks County, and took part in the Revolutionary War.

Jacob commanded the "Bucks County Associators", but was not in the regular army. In the roster of the Bucks County Associators, August 19, 1775, the officers were; Capt. John Jarvis, First Lt. Nathaniel VanSant, 2nd Lt., Jacob Vandegrift, Ensign Jacob Vandegrift Jr. Among the privates were John Keen, Folard Vandegrift, John Vandegrift. In Lt. Col. Keller's Battalion of Militia in service in the Fall of 1781, Capt. Robert Patterson's Company were privates; Jacob, Barnet, Benjamin, and Thomas Vandegrift, mustered Oct. 11, 1781.

Jacob Vandegrift and Catherine (Catrintje) Hufte were married on 19 May 1753. Catherine (Catrintje) Hufte was born in 1731. She died on 31 Dec 1772. (See rec. of Pres. Church, Churchville, Pa., in Pa Archives, Series 2 page 509. Jacob Vandegrift and Catherine (Catrintje) Hufte had the following children:

He was buried in Feasterville Cemetery, Bucks Co., Pa. Jacob removed to Northampton Township were he paid a tax on 158 acres of land in 1784, and had seven living in his house. His wife was Cornelia Vanarsdalen. Their marriage can be found in the Newtown Presbyterian Church records, dated December 1775.

Cornelia was the daughter of Simon and Alice (Else) Vanarsdalen of Southampton Township. jacob died December 28, 1838 at the age of 84 years and Cornelia died January 31, 1831 at the age of 80 years. They are buried in the graveyard at Feasterville.

Jacob is listed in "The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution - Revolutionary War Graves Register".

Bernard moved to New Jersey.

Bernard was willed the plantation in Lower Dublin Township, by his father in 1770, but he was living on it in 1769, for he paid a tax in the township on 200 acres and 3 horses and 3 cattle.

On April 12, 1783, Bernard and Jane conveyed part ot this tract to George Edwards.

On June 19, 1792, Bernard, yeoman, conveyed to Griffith Miles more of the same tract.

The residue of my personal estate I order and direct that my executor sell as soon as reasonably may, after my decease... the money thereby arising to be applied as directed - the best price they can obtain by public or private sale...
The money to be put on Sufficient security and pay or cuase to be paid unto John Yearly and every year during his natural life for his support and can be advanced...as necissity...
